Spearfish Canyon, SD

The Black Hills of SD have a surprising amount of fly fishing opportunities. There are enough small streams and lakes to keep an angler happy for weeks. I had a business trip in Deadwood, SD. After researching the area, I decided to pack my gear just in case. I got lucky and I squeezed in a couple hours on Spearfish. The picture is a testament to the clarity of the water at Spearfish creek. The fish spooked easily and fishing it requires stealth and good presentation. Overhanging brush and trees also required attention to back casts. The bow and arrow cast came in handy several times. When I first approached the stream I was surprised to see several fish in a small pool. I soon found that the stream was loaded with fish. I didn't catch anything over twelve inches, but I landed twenty in two hours.
